## Key points

- Eric Bandholz, founder of Beardbrand, posted on October 9, 2026 that Grok Bot built an agent telephone support line for his Shopify store in one day, using xAI's voice model.
- Per his posts, callers can check order status, make changes, change subscription details, ask about products, create an order, and be looped in to a human rep.
- His post passed 640,000 views; Elon Musk quoted it on October 10 and that quote passed 1.2 million views within six hours. SpaceXAI has not published anything about the build.
- xAI's speech-to-speech voice model, grok-voice-think-fast-2.0, lists at $0.08 a minute ($4.80 an hour) plus $0.004 per text input, so a three-minute call costs $0.24 in voice model time before any carrier charge.
- Phone calls reach xAI's voice API over SIP from your own carrier, contact center or PBX; xAI's docs say SpaceXAI phone numbers cannot be provisioned through its API.
- Bandholz has not published how the line connects to Shopify, and no one outside his store has tested it. He says it took 25 to 40% of his plan's usage and that a tutorial is coming.

## At a glance

- **What did Grok Bot build?** A telephone support line for Beardbrand's Shopify store, per founder Eric Bandholz: an xAI voice agent that answers calls, checks orders, makes changes and hands callers to a human.
- **Is it an official SpaceXAI product?** No. It is one customer's build, shared on X on October 9, 2026. SpaceXAI's own phone feature is a developer API for its voice model, with phone numbers you bring yourself.
- **What would it cost to run?** xAI lists its voice model at $0.08 per minute. Bandholz has not shared his call volume, carrier bill or setup, so no total is known.

**Eric Bandholz, founder of the Shopify grooming brand Beardbrand, says Grok Bot built a working phone support line for his store in one day.** He [posted it on X](https://x.com/bandholz/status/2108634812437156129) at 19:04 UTC on October 9, 2026: Grok Bot "created an agent telephone support line with @xai voice in ONE DAY for my @shopify store." On October 10 at 14:32 UTC Elon Musk [quoted the post](https://x.com/elonmusk/status/2108928554314711097) with two words, Grok and @Bot. Read at 20:05 UTC, Bandholz's post had 640,293 views and Musk's quote 1,219,466.

This is one customer's build, not a SpaceXAI launch. No SpaceXAI post covers it, and [Grok Bot](https://cellcog.ai/blog/what-is-grok-bot/) itself has no phone feature in its docs. What it shows is how far a general agent can get on a real small-business job when the voice model and the store connector already exist.

## What the line does

Bandholz described the line in his first post and filled in the rest in replies on the same thread.

*Table: The Beardbrand phone line, per Eric Bandholz's posts (October 9-10, 2026)*

| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Built by | Grok Bot, using xAI's voice model |
| Time to build | One day, per Bandholz |
| Store | Beardbrand, on Shopify |
| Existing customers | Order status, modifications, subscription changes |
| New callers | Learn about the company and products, create an order |
| Hand-off | Loops in a human rep |
| Voice | Trained on the brand's voice, he said in a reply |
| Plan usage | 25 to 40% of his Premium+ usage on this project, he said |
| Status | Live for testing; he asked followers to help find bugs |

His reason is the line small stores will recognize: "We've never had phone support and our customers will finally be getting it soon without us breaking the bank." He also said the build was not one prompt: "It was just me talking to it and modifying as things were working or not working." A tutorial is promised, not published.

The replies became a queue. People asked for the same thing, and the @bot account answered many of them the same way: "Sending this to your Grok Bot now."

## The voice layer underneath

The phone part runs on xAI's developer voice stack, not on Grok Bot itself. xAI's [Speech to Speech documentation](https://docs.x.ai/developers/model-capabilities/audio/speech-to-speech) names the model, and its [SIP page](https://docs.x.ai/developers/model-capabilities/audio/speech-to-speech/sip) describes the phone path: "SIP lets you route PSTN, contact-center, or PBX calls into a Speech to Speech API session."

You register a number you own, with a webhook. When a caller dials, xAI sends a signed incoming-call event; your code opens a WebSocket for that call, sets the voice and instructions, and the caller's audio is bridged into the session. The docs are plain about one limit: "Provisioning SpaceXAI phone numbers via API is not supported." Somewhere in front of the Beardbrand line sits a carrier or PBX number.

xAI's [models and pricing page](https://docs.x.ai/developers/models) lists grok-voice-think-fast-2.0, the model behind the grok-voice-latest alias, at $0.08 a minute ($4.80 an hour) plus $0.004 per text input. A three-minute support call is $0.24 of voice model time, before the carrier and before any Shopify lookups the agent makes.

## How it compares

*Table: A phone line from a Grok Bot build vs a CellCog AI employee (read October 10, 2026)*

| | Grok Bot build (Beardbrand) | CellCog AI employee |
|---|---|---|
| The number | Your own carrier, contact-center or PBX number over SIP; xAI does not provision numbers through its API | The employee gets its own US phone number inside the product, on your yes |
| Who answers | A voice agent the Bot configured | The employee's voice, with the employee behind it: the same one that runs its email, tasks and meetings |
| Hand-off | Loops in a human rep, per Bandholz | The voice can transfer the caller to your verified number |
| The store | Order status and changes, per Bandholz; setup not published | Connects to Shopify through CellCog's tools; refunds and cancellations wait for your approval |
| Computer | One cloud computer per user, shared by all of that user's Bots (SpaceXAI docs) | Its own secure VM, file system and browser identity per employee |
| Record of calls | Not described | Every call is recorded and transcribed for the employee |

If you already pay for a plan that includes Grok Bot and you can wire a SIP number yourself, Bandholz's build shows the path works. The difference to weigh is ownership: his line is a project the Bot built, and the phone number, the call flow and the hand-off live in what was built that day. A CellCog employee holds the number as part of its role and answers with its memory of your customers from every other channel.

## What is not established yet

- **How it connects to Shopify.** Bandholz has not published the setup; the tutorial is promised.
- **Cost at volume.** His call volume and carrier bill are unknown; only the voice model's list price is public.
- **Reliability.** He opened the line for testing on October 9 and asked people to find bugs. No outside test has been published.
- **A SpaceXAI product.** There is no announcement of a phone feature in Grok Bot, only the developer voice API.

## What we are watching

- Bandholz's tutorial and the tools he names in it.
- Whether SpaceXAI ships phone numbers or a phone template inside Grok Bot.
- Any change to xAI's voice pricing or SIP limits.

## Where CellCog sits

Our conflict, declared: we build CellCog, where businesses hire AI employees that can [hold their own phone numbers](https://cellcog.ai/blog/ai-employees-have-phone-numbers/), so this is a direct comparison with a competitor. Our earlier record covers [Grok Bot's Shopify connector](https://cellcog.ai/blog/shopify-grok-bot-connector/), and the [Grok Bot email](https://cellcog.ai/blog/grok-bot-email/) record covers the inbox it got on October 9.
