## Key points

- Walmart announced Agent Profiles on October 21, 2026: each AI shopping agent gets its own profile inside the customer's Walmart account.
- An agent's purchases show separately from the customer's own, and the customer can delete the profile at any time.
- Approval on every purchase is the default; customers can instead set a spending limit, for example $50, $100 or $200, and Walmart may still ask for approval.
- Agents never receive card details and cannot add or change payment methods; agents that break Walmart's terms get blocked.
- Agent Profiles launch within a month; the Walmart Agent Gateway, built on MCP, starts as a beta for companies and developers.

## At a glance

- **What are Walmart Agent Profiles?** A separate profile for each AI agent inside a customer's Walmart account, so the agent's purchases show on their own and come with spending controls the customer sets.
- **Can an AI agent spend my money at Walmart without asking?** Only if you allow it. Approval on every purchase is the default; you can set a limit such as $50, $100 or $200, and Walmart may still ask for approval.
- **When does it launch?** Walmart says Agent Profiles launch in the next month from October 21, 2026. The Agent Gateway starts as a beta for companies and developers, with no public date.

**Walmart said on October 21, 2026 that AI agents shopping for its customers will get their own profile inside the customer's Walmart account, with approval on every purchase by default and an optional spending limit, for example $50, $100 or $200. Agents never receive the card number and cannot add or change a payment method. Agent Profiles are "launching in the next month."**

The [announcement](https://corporate.walmart.com/news/2026/10/Making-It-Possible-for-Agents-to-Shop-on-Behalf-of-Customers) pairs the profiles with a Walmart Agent Gateway, a direct connection for agents built on MCP that starts as a beta for companies and developers, and a set of terms every shopping agent must follow. Agents that break the terms will be blocked from Walmart's site. It covers Walmart and Sam's Club.

## The three pieces

![Animated scene: a Walmart account card holding a padlocked payment card, a robot arm with an Agent Profile badge pushing a cart, and a panel reading approve every purchase by default or a spending limit dial set to $100 between $50 and $200](https://cellcog.ai/blog/media/walmart-agent-profiles/walmart-agent-profile.svg)
*An agent shops in its own profile, with your approval or limit, and never sees the card.*

*Table: What Walmart announced on October 21, 2026, from its newsroom post*

| Piece | What it does | When |
|---|---|---|
| Agent Profiles | A separate profile for each agent inside the customer's account, with its own purchase list and spending controls | Launching in the next month |
| Walmart Agent Gateway | A direct connection for agents over MCP, instead of clicking through a website built for people | Beta for companies and developers first; no public date |
| Terms for AI agents | Rules on approvals, payment, data access and returns; agents that break them get blocked | Announced with the profiles |

Today an agent signs in with the customer's own account, so its purchases are mixed in with everything else. Under the new setup, the first time a customer uses an agent through the gateway, Walmart creates an Agent Profile for it automatically. The customer links it by signing into Walmart, chooses the approval rule, and can delete the profile at any time. Walmart's own comparison: "Think about it like adding someone as a cardholder on your credit card."

## Who controls what

*Table: Agent shopping controls, per Walmart's terms for AI agents*

| Control | Who holds it |
|---|---|
| Approve every purchase (the default) | The customer |
| A spending limit instead of approving each purchase | The customer sets it, for example $50, $100 or $200 |
| Extra approval even inside the limit | Walmart may require it |
| Payment card details | Never sent to the agent |
| Adding or changing payment methods | Agents cannot |
| The customer's wider shopping history | Not shared; Walmart helps the agent find the customer's usual items |
| Returns if an agent does something unintended | Walmart's normal returns process applies |

Prices stay the same for agents. Walmart writes "We price products, not people," so an agent sees the prices a person sees on Walmart.com, with offers and fees shown before purchase. What the agent's maker does with the information it receives falls under that company's privacy policy; what Walmart collects falls under the [Walmart Privacy Notice](https://corporate.walmart.com/privacy-security/walmart-privacy-notice).

## What is still open

- **Which agents:** the post lists Sparky and conversational commerce integrations "with Muse, ChatGPT, Gemini and others," but does not say which agents will use the gateway first or how a company joins the beta.
- **When the gateway opens:** beta only, no public date.
- **Where:** no countries, membership requirements or eligibility rules are given.
- **A naming slip:** the post expands MCP as "model text protocol." MCP is the [Model Context Protocol](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/introduction), the open standard agents use to call tools.

## Walmart opens the door Amazon closed

Walmart is inviting agents in on its own terms, with an identity, limits and rules. Amazon went the other way when it [blocked Meta's Muse from shopping](https://cellcog.ai/blog/amazon-blocks-meta-muse/). For agent makers the difference is practical: one retailer gives them a supported lane, the other treats them as bots to keep out.

## How CellCog handles agent purchases

Our AI employees buy through [Spend](https://cellcog.ai/blog/ai-employee-spend/): the owner approves each purchase in Link at the exact amount and merchant, and the employee pays with a single-use card it fills in its own browser without seeing the number. Walmart's design adds something ours does not have, a standing limit so small purchases can go through without a tap each time. Ours keeps the owner's approval on every purchase.
