Three models named aurora-red-alpha, aurora-green-alpha and aurora-blue-alpha are listed in OpenAI’s API right now, with no announcement, no documentation and no price. We confirmed all three with an authenticated call to OpenAI’s model list on October 18, 2026. OpenAI’s records show they were created between 01:13 and 01:15 UTC on October 17, about 26 hours before anyone on X noticed them.
Posts on X read them as a new GPT or a counter to Anthropic’s Fable 5.5. Here is what the API actually shows, what the name has meant before, and what nobody can say yet.

OpenAI’s API lists three new models, aurora-red-alpha, aurora-green-alpha and aurora-blue-alpha, confirmed by our own call to its model list on October 18, 2026.
OpenAI’s records show all three created between 01:13 and 01:15 UTC on October 17, about 26 hours before the first X post spotted them.
OpenAI’s changelog and models page mention none of them; there is no price, no description and no access policy.
An unclaimed OpenRouter model called Aurora Alpha appeared on February 9, 2026, three days before OpenAI’s fast GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark, but the link was never confirmed.
Guesses that these are GPT-6.1 Astra or a launch next week have no support in anything OpenAI has published.
§ 01What OpenAI’s API shows
OpenAI’s /v1/models endpoint returns every model an account can call. Ours returned 144 models on October 18, three of them new.
| Model ID | Created (UTC) | Owner | Shutdown date |
|---|---|---|---|
| aurora-blue-alpha | Oct 17, 01:13:49 | system | none |
| aurora-green-alpha | Oct 17, 01:13:55 | system | none |
| aurora-red-alpha | Oct 17, 01:15:26 | system | none |
The owner field reads “system”, the same as OpenAI’s own released models. None has a shutdown date. All three were created inside two minutes of each other, which points to one deployment, not three separate experiments.
Nothing else about them is public. OpenAI’s API changelog and its models page carried zero mentions of “aurora” when we read both on October 18. We listed the models; we did not call them, so we cannot say what they do, how fast they run or what they cost.
§ 02How it surfaced
The first post we found was from Lisan al Gaib (@scaling01) at 02:59 UTC on October 18: “these just appeared in the OpenAI API”. Andrew Curran followed at 03:13 UTC with “Three mysterious new models just showed up in the OpenAI API”. By 04:00 UTC the cluster on X had ten posts and the guesses had started.
§ 03What “aurora” meant last time
This is not the first Aurora. On February 9, 2026, OpenRouter listed Aurora Alpha, a model whose maker it did not name. Its page still says “This is a cloaked model provided to the community to gather feedback. A reasoning model designed for speed.” It has a 128K context window.
Three days later, on February 12, OpenAI announced GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark, “an ultra-fast model for real-time coding in Codex” served on Cerebras hardware. OpenAI said it delivers “more than 1000 tokens per second while remaining highly capable for real-world coding tasks”. The timing and the speed pitch made many people assume Aurora Alpha was Codex-Spark, and @scaling01 repeated that link on Saturday. Neither OpenAI nor OpenRouter has ever confirmed it. Aurora Alpha is still unclaimed.
So the name hints at something fast and coding-shaped, if it is reused on purpose. That is a pattern, not evidence.
§ 04Confirmed vs not confirmed
| Claim | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Three aurora models are listed in OpenAI’s API | Confirmed | OpenAI /v1/models, our read |
| Created Oct 17, 01:13 to 01:15 UTC | Confirmed | OpenAI model records |
| OpenAI has documented or priced them | No | OpenAI changelog and models page |
| They are fast coding models like Codex-Spark | Unconfirmed guess from the name | OpenRouter, X posts |
| They are GPT-6.1 Astra | Unlikely: OpenAI shelved Astra 6.1 | Our Astra 6.1 record |
| A launch is coming next week | Speculation only | X posts |
On the Astra guess: OpenAI shelved GPT-6.1 Astra earlier this month after it tested worse on deception and scope, as our Astra 6.1 record covers. Nothing in the API ties the aurora names to it.
§ 05What it means if you build on OpenAI
Nothing to change yet. A model in the list with no docs can be pulled, renamed or repriced without notice, and OpenAI has not said who can call it. If you test one, keep it out of production, log what it returns, and expect the name to change at launch. We will fold in the official name, price and benchmarks here the day OpenAI publishes them.
§ 06What we are watching
- An OpenAI changelog or blog entry naming any aurora model.
- Prices or rate limits appearing for the three IDs.
- Whether OpenRouter lists them, or reveals what Aurora Alpha was.

Q1When did the aurora models appear?
OpenAI’s model records give creation times of 01:13 to 01:15 UTC on October 17, 2026. The first X post we found spotted them at 02:59 UTC on October 18.
Q2Can I use aurora-red-alpha?
It shows up in an account’s model list, but OpenAI has not documented or priced it. We listed it and did not call it, so we cannot say what access looks like.
Q3Is Aurora the same as OpenRouter's Aurora Alpha?
Nobody has said. OpenRouter’s Aurora Alpha, listed February 9, 2026, is still a cloaked model with no named maker; the shared name is the only link.
Q4Was Aurora Alpha GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark?
Many people assumed so because Codex-Spark, a fast coding model, launched three days later. Neither OpenAI nor OpenRouter has confirmed it.
Q5When will OpenAI announce them?
OpenAI has given no date. We will update this page with the official name, price and benchmarks when it publishes them.
