From October 9, 2026, people who use Gemini without a paid Google AI plan can only use Flash-Lite, Google’s lightest model, in the Gemini app. AI Plus subscribers keep Flash but lose Pro. Google confirmed it on its Gemini help center in a page titled “Changes to Gemini model access and limits”; 9to5Google reported it first on October 3. AI Pro and AI Ultra keep all three models. This page reads Google’s own pages as of October 5, 2026.
- Google’s Gemini help center confirms that from October 9, 2026, people using Gemini without a Google AI plan can use only the Flash-Lite model in the Gemini app.
- AI Plus subscribers keep Flash-Lite and Flash but lose Pro; Google says each will get an email with their own effective date.
- AI Pro and AI Ultra keep all three models, plus the Deep Think option.
- The change covers Gemini Apps on personal accounts. Google’s page does not address Workspace accounts.
- Usage limits are unchanged from May 17: compute-based limits that refresh every 5 hours up to a weekly cap, 2x standard for AI Plus, 4x for AI Pro, and 5x or 20x AI Pro for AI Ultra.
- Google’s main limits page still listed all three models for every plan when we read it on October 5, so the dedicated change page is the one to trust.
§ 01Who keeps which model
Google’s change page says: “Starting in October 2026, there will be changes to model availability for Gemini Apps when you use a personal account.” It continues: “These changes will start to take effect for users without an AI subscription on October 9th.” AI Plus has no single date; the page says those subscribers “should receive an email that explains when these changes will take effect for you.”
| Plan | Before | After the change | Effective |
|---|---|---|---|
| Without a plan | Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro | Flash-Lite only | October 9, 2026 |
| AI Plus | Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro | Flash-Lite, Flash | Per Google’s email |
| AI Pro | Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro | Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro, Deep Think | No change |
| AI Ultra | Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro | Flash-Lite, Flash, Pro, Deep Think | No change |
The Before column comes from Google’s main limits and upgrades page, which still showed Yes for Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro on all four plans when we read it on October 5. The two Google pages disagree for now. The dedicated change page is newer and carries the date, so it is the one to plan around.
One thing the change page adds: on every model you keep, you can pick an effort level of low, medium or high. Higher effort gives more thorough answers and, in Google’s words, “will also use more of your limit.”
§ 02The usage limits behind it
Model access is one lever; usage is the other. Those limits did not change this time. They date from May 17, 2026, when Google moved Gemini Apps to “compute-based usage limits that will refresh every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit.”
| Plan | Usage limit |
|---|---|
| Without a plan | Standard limits |
| AI Plus | 2x higher than standard |
| AI Pro | 4x higher than standard |
| AI Ultra | 5x or 20x higher than AI Pro, depending on the subscription |
Google lists media generation, Deep Research, the Pro model, and extended thinking and Deep Think as premium features that use the limit faster. Taking Pro away from free and AI Plus accounts removes the single most expensive model from the two plans with the smallest limits.
§ 03What it means if you rely on free Gemini
- Your chats keep working on October 9, on Flash-Lite. Heavy reasoning, long coding prompts and close reading of large files are where you will feel the difference, since Google describes Pro as the model that “excels at complex math and coding prompts.”
- AI Plus is now a Flash plan. If you bought it for Pro, watch for Google’s email and compare it with AI Pro.
- The API is a separate product. The change page covers Gemini Apps on personal accounts only; it does not mention developer pricing or Workspace.
The same week, 9to5Google noted that the paid tiers gain Deep Think while the entry tiers narrow. Free tiers across assistants have been tightening all year, and the move here is the same one: the strongest model becomes the reason to pay.
§ 04What we are watching
- The AI Plus date. Google has promised subscribers an email; we will add the date when it is public.
- The main limits page. When it catches up with the change page, the Before column becomes history.
- Workspace and the API. Any matching change for business accounts or developer access would be a separate announcement.

Q1Is Gemini still free after October 9?
Yes. Gemini without a plan keeps working, but only with the Flash-Lite model in the Gemini app, under the standard usage limits.
Q2When does the change hit AI Plus subscribers?
Google has not given one date. Its help page says AI Plus subscribers should receive an email that explains when the change takes effect for them.
Q3Which plan do I need to keep Gemini Pro?
AI Pro or AI Ultra. After the change, those are the only plans with the Pro model in the Gemini app, and the only ones with Deep Think.
Q4Does this affect the Gemini API or Workspace?
Google’s change page is about Gemini Apps on personal accounts. It says nothing about the Gemini API or Workspace accounts.
Q5Does CellCog depend on Gemini plans?
No. Every CellCog tier runs on Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5, and you pay for the work you assign, not for a model tier. We track plan changes like this one because many of our readers compare assistants.
