GPT Image 2.5 does not exist. Not as an announced model, not as an API identifier, and not, strictly, as a leak: the name people are searching for is a community label applied to two anonymous checkpoints and one pop-up window nobody can click yet. That distinction is the most useful thing anyone can tell you about it right now.
As of September 4, 2026, OpenAI has announced nothing. We pulled the company’s developer model list, image generation guide, pricing page and API changelog directly this morning: the current image model is gpt-image-2, snapshot gpt-image-2-2026-04-21, launched April 21, 2026 as ChatGPT Images 2.0. The URL a gpt-image-2.5 model page would live at returns a 404. The GPT-6 Astra launch of September 3 does not mention an image model at all.
What does exist is a short, fast-moving rumor chain with one unusually concrete piece of evidence in it. So this page does what our Astra tracker and Fable 5.1 tracker did: every claim dated, official statements separated from reporting and both separated from rumor, updated the same day the story moves.

The chain is five weeks long, and the order is the story.

The Arena sightings. Arena runs anonymous models in battle mode before labs name them. Around August 9 a model labeled mona-lisa-1 started appearing; around August 21 a second, luna-lisa-alpha. Observers attributed both to OpenAI, read the first as the larger checkpoint and the second as a smaller or faster one, and described the output as better than GPT Image 2 in realism, skin, fabric and lighting, without being a leap. The same shape preceded GPT Image 2 itself, which ran on Arena under anonymous names in April 2026 before its April 21 launch. That precedent is why a pair of food-free codenames got the attention it did.
The modal. This is the piece that separates the rumor from the usual Arena chatter. On September 3, two independent researchers posted screenshots of an announcement modal inside ChatGPT and the Codex desktop app. The copy reads “Image creation got a major upgrade,” promises “higher-quality results, faster generation, and smarter creative tools,” and ends in a “Try it” button. The gate that would show it to users was off for everyone; the hero image behind it had been uploaded on September 1. A shipped asset with launch copy is evidence that a release is staged. It is not evidence of the model’s name, its price, or the day.
The name. “GPT Image 2.5” was attached by commentators, not by OpenAI. TestingCatalog, the account that tracks these builds most closely, posted the name as a question. One researcher called the same modal “ImageGen 2.5.” No OpenAI page, changelog line, or staff post contains the string. If you are watching for “2.5,” you may be watching for a name that never ships.
§ 03What GPT Image 2 costs and scores today
Any successor gets measured against this. GPT Image 2 launched April 21, 2026 as ChatGPT Images 2.0, on every ChatGPT plan, with “images with thinking” on paid plans. In the API it supports generation and editing through the Images API and the Responses API, with a 50 percent Batch API discount.

The chart is in cents. Text input tokens ($5 per million) and image input tokens for edits ($8 per million) are billed separately, per OpenAI’s pricing page. On Arena’s leaderboards, as of this writing, gpt-image-2 at medium quality holds number one on text-to-image (1382), single-image editing (1462) and multi-image editing (1454). Those are community preference scores, not OpenAI’s benchmarks, and there is no entry for any 2.5.
§ 04Why the rumor is credible anyway
The strongest argument is cadence, not the leak. OpenAI has shipped an image model roughly every four months: gpt-image-1 in the spring of 2025, gpt-image-1.5 on December 16, 2025 (up to four times faster, better dense text), gpt-image-2 on April 21, 2026. September is where the next one lands on that spacing, and OpenAI has a shipped-but-gated announcement asset inside its own product. Very few rumors come with the launch copy already written.
What the rumor is not backed by: a model name from OpenAI, a price, a benchmark, a model card, a reproducible prompt comparison, or any named OpenAI source. Tester impressions of “less grain” are anecdotes, and they disagree with each other.
Also worth knowing, because the search results blur them: gpt-image-1.5 is OpenAI’s December 2025 model, not a preview of 2.5; MAI-Image-2.5 is a Microsoft model that appears on the same leaderboards; and Gemini 2.5 Flash Image is Google’s. None of them is the thing this page is about.
§ 05What we are watching for
We route real image work to GPT Image 2 every day, so our watchlist is an operator’s, not a spectator’s.
- A model page. The moment developers.openai.com serves a gpt-image-2.5 page, or the changelog names a new image model under any name, this stops being a rumor page.
- The modal flipping on. The staged “Image creation got a major upgrade” announcement becoming visible in ChatGPT is the consumer-side launch, whether or not the API moves the same day.
- Text rendering and edit fidelity. The two axes where GPT Image 2 earned its leaderboard positions and where our infographic and product-visual work lives. A point release that improves realism but regresses text is a sidegrade for us.
- Price. gpt-image-1.5 held its tier’s price and got faster. If 2.5 changes the per-image price in either direction, it changes the economics of every agent that produces visuals at volume.
- Our own routing. When the model is real and better on our axes, our image agent moves to it, and this page records the day. If it is not better on our axes, this page records that too.
