Most small businesses fall behind on the books for the same reason: categorizing, reconciling and chasing invoices takes hours nobody has. We ranked nine AI bookkeeping tools on how much of that work they take off a small team, with every price read on the vendor’s own pricing page on October 22, 2026. We make CellCog, and it is in the table; the conflict is declared under it.

AI bookkeeping software categorizes bank and card transactions, reconciles accounts, tracks invoices and bills, and prepares the month-end close. The tools differ in who keeps the ledger and who does the work.
The category holds three kinds of product: accounting ledgers with AI built in (QuickBooks, Xero, Digits, Puzzle), add-ons and services that work your books for you (Booke AI, Bookeeping.ai, Pilot, Zeni), and AI employees.
CellCog ranks first for small businesses because one AI bookkeeper categorizes, reconciles, chases overdue invoices and prepares the close inside the books you already keep, and asks before any money moves.
QuickBooks Online is the pick if you keep your own books: Simple Start lists at $38 a month, with 50% off for the first three months on October 22, 2026.
Xero Early is the cheapest paid ledger here at $27 a month after its intro offer; Puzzle starts at $30, Bookeeping.ai at $35 and Digits at $65. Zeni, with a dedicated finance team, starts at $549.
Pick by who does the bookkeeping: you, in a ledger; an add-on or service, inside your ledger; or an AI employee that does the work and waits for your yes before payments go out.
§ 01Three kinds of AI bookkeeping software
The label covers three different products, and buying the wrong kind is the usual disappointment.
Ledgers give you the system of record and some AI to speed it up; the bookkeeping is still yours. Add-ons and services do the work inside a ledger you already pay for, and the services add human accountants at a higher price. An AI employee takes the role: it works in your books, reports what it did and what it is unsure about, and waits for your yes before anything goes out.
§ 02The AI bookkeeping software rankings
| Rank | Tool | Cheapest listed plan | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | CellCog | Plans from $8/mo; usage-based; you pay for the work, not the hire | An AI bookkeeper that categorizes transactions, reconciles accounts, tracks invoices and bills, drafts overdue reminders and prepares the month-end close in QuickBooks or your spreadsheets, asking before money moves | Small businesses that want the bookkeeping done, not another app |
| 2 | QuickBooks Online | Simple Start $38/mo, 50% off for 3 months | The accounting ledger most US small businesses already use, with Intuit’s AI agents built in | Keeping your own books in the standard ledger |
| 3 | Xero | Early $27/mo after an intro offer | Accounting ledger with auto-reconcile and JAX, its AI finance partner | A lower-priced ledger |
| 4 | Digits | Essentials $65/mo | AI-native accounting software with real-time bookkeeping and an agentic close | Replacing your ledger with an AI-first one |
| 5 | Puzzle | Starter $30/mo billed monthly | AI accounting software that categorizes, reconciles and drafts; you review and approve | Startups that want a modern ledger |
| 6 | Booke AI | $129 per business/mo | Works inside QuickBooks and Xero: daily bank-feed categorization and reconciliation | Owners and firms who keep QuickBooks or Xero |
| 7 | Bookeeping.ai | Start $35/mo after a free trial | AI bookkeeping and reports with an AI accountant, imports QuickBooks data | A low-priced AI bookkeeping add-on |
| 8 | Pilot | Essentials $99/mo, up to $100,000 in monthly expenses | Bookkeeping service with tax and CFO plans on top | Handing the books to a service |
| 9 | Zeni | Starter from $549/mo, $494 billed annually | AI bookkeeping plus a dedicated finance team | Funded startups that want a finance team |
Conflict of interest: CellCog wrote this ranking and sits at number one. The ranking rewards how much of the bookkeeping one product does for a small business, which is how CellCog is built. If you want to keep your own books in the ledger your accountant already knows, QuickBooks Online at number two is the better buy, and we say so in the FAQ.
§ 03Why this order
CellCog is first because the whole bookkeeping role sits in one AI employee: per our AI bookkeeper page (October 2026), it matches bank and card lines to your chart of accounts, reconciles statements line by line and explains each difference, keeps receivables and payables current, builds the aging report and drafts reminders in your voice, and runs the month-end close with a plain-language summary. Payment runs wait for your approval. It is not a ledger: your books stay in QuickBooks or your spreadsheet, and tax filing stays with your accountant.
QuickBooks Online is second and wins for anyone who keeps the books themselves: it is the default ledger for US accountants, and Simple Start lists at $38 a month with half off for three months. Xero is third, the cheapest paid ledger here at $27 a month after a six-month intro price, with auto-reconcile and its JAX assistant.
Digits and Puzzle are the AI-first ledgers: Digits from $65 a month with an agentic close, Puzzle from $30 a month with categorizing and reconciling done for your review. Booke AI and Bookeeping.ai are add-ons; Booke works inside QuickBooks and Xero at $129 per business a month, so its price sits on top of your ledger. Pilot and Zeni are services with people behind them: Pilot from $99 a month, Zeni from $549 a month with a dedicated finance team.
§ 04Cheapest listed plan, side by side
| Tool | Price | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Xero | $27 | Early, list price after the 6-month intro offer |
| Puzzle | $30 | Starter, billed monthly |
| Bookeeping.ai | $35 | Start, billed monthly after a free trial |
| QuickBooks Online | $38 | Simple Start, list price before the 3-month discount |
| Digits | $65 | Essentials |
| Pilot | $99 | Essentials, up to $100,000 in monthly expenses |
| Booke AI | $129 | Per business, on top of QuickBooks or Xero |
| Zeni | $549 | Starter, billed monthly ($494 billed annually) |
The gap between the ledgers and the services is the price of people: Pilot and Zeni bundle human bookkeepers or a finance team, and price by your monthly expenses. Add-ons such as Booke AI also need a ledger subscription underneath. CellCog is left out of the chart because it is usage-based: the cost depends on how much work you assign, and the pricing page has the figures.
§ 05Where CellCog stands, angle by angle
| Angle | CellCog | Who wins instead, if not us |
|---|---|---|
| Categorizes and reconciles | In QuickBooks or your spreadsheets, unclear lines flagged | |
| Chases overdue invoices | Builds the aging report, drafts reminders in your voice | |
| Asks before money moves | Payment runs wait for your yes | |
| Its own ledger | Not accounting software; works in yours | QuickBooks, Xero, Digits, Puzzle |
| Xero connection | Not connected yet; works from exports today | Booke AI |
| Human accountant on the account | No | Pilot, Zeni |
| Flat public monthly price | Usage-based, plans from $8/mo | Puzzle, Bookeeping.ai |
§ 06How to choose
- If you keep your own books and your accountant uses QuickBooks, choose QuickBooks Online.
- If price matters most, Xero, Puzzle or Bookeeping.ai.
- If you want an AI-first ledger built around the close, Digits.
- If you already run QuickBooks or Xero and only want categorizing done, Booke AI.
- If you want people doing the books, Pilot; with a finance team on top, Zeni.
- If nobody on the team has time for the bookkeeping at all, choose CellCog.
- Whatever you pick, review the first month’s close before you trust it, and keep tax filing with your accountant.
§ 07The honest caveats
Prices change often, and several above carry intro offers. QuickBooks showed Simple Start at $19 a month for the first three months; Xero showed Early at $2.70 a month for six months, with the offer ending November 2, 2026. Puzzle’s yearly billing saves 20%, and Bookeeping.ai lists an annual option at about 20% off. Pilot and Zeni price by your monthly expenses, so a larger business pays more. QuickBooks also offers a free plan for basic invoicing. Docyt is not ranked because it prices per hotel property, not for a general small business.

Q1What does AI bookkeeping software do?
It matches bank and card transactions to your chart of accounts, reconciles statements against the books, keeps invoices and bills current, flags what does not add up and prepares the month-end close for your accountant.
Q2QuickBooks or CellCog?
QuickBooks if you want to keep the books yourself in the ledger most US accountants know. CellCog if you would rather hand the bookkeeping to an AI employee that works inside your books and reports back. Many businesses use both: CellCog’s bookkeeper connects to QuickBooks.
Q3Can AI do my QuickBooks?
Partly. QuickBooks has Intuit’s AI agents built in, Booke AI categorizes and reconciles inside QuickBooks and Xero, and a CellCog AI bookkeeper connects to QuickBooks to categorize, reconcile and prepare the close for your review.
Q4Will AI bookkeeping replace my accountant?
No. It keeps the books current so your accountant gets clean records. Tax filing, judgment calls and sign-off stay with your accountant, and Pilot and Zeni sell that human layer as a service.
Q5Is it safe to let AI touch my books?
Start read-only and widen access as you trust it. CellCog prepares payment runs and reminders but releases nothing without your approval.
