Fable 5.5 is a rumor with a better number than it had two weeks ago. On September 22, 2026 Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 and named what comes next: “Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Haiku 5.5 will follow in the coming weeks”. Fable is not in that sentence. As of September 23, 2026, 14:40 UTC, Anthropic’s model documentation lists claude-fable-5-1 as the current Fable, and no Fable 5.5 identifier, price or system card exists.
What does exist is a story that has now worn two numbers. The pretraining-run rumor that circulated as Fable 5.2 in early September was posted as Fable 5.5 two days later, and this week Anthropic moved its whole family to 5.5. Fable 5.5 does not exist in any Anthropic document as of September 23, 2026. The September 22 Opus 5.5 announcement names Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 as next and says nothing about Fable. Claude Fable 5.1, released September 1, is the current Fable.
The story has worn two numbers. On September 8 @kimmonismus relayed a new pretraining run as the next Fable, calling the name provisional; our Fable 5.2 tracker holds that chain. On September 10 @Mr_Salio posted the same run as Fable 5.5, late September or early October.
The 5.5 label is now the likelier one, by inference only. Anthropic gave Opus, Sonnet and Haiku the number 5.5 this week, so a next Fable carrying 5.5 would match the family. Anthropic has not said a Fable is coming at all.
The bar moved on September 22. Anthropic says Opus 5.5 performs at the level of Fable 5.1 on most work at $4 and $20 per million tokens, against Fable 5.1’s $10 and $50. A Fable 5.5 has to justify the premium over a model that already matches its predecessor.
Fable 5 to Fable 5.1 took 84 days. A Fable 5.5 on October 1 would come 30 days after 5.1. CellCog moved every Claude tier from Fable 5.1 to Opus 5.5 on September 22; a Fable 5.5 would be a same-day routing decision, and this page becomes its record.

On September 5 @kimmonismus wrote “Fable 5.2, or whatever it ends up being called, is expected very soon”, and on September 8 relayed a new pretraining run with an “End of september or early october release planned”. Two days later @Mr_Salio posted: “Fable 5.5 could launch in late September or early October” and “First fresh pretraining run for the Fable class”. Same run, same window, a different number. The earlier August 13 post had used 5.5 already, adding “Deployment has reportedly been slowed by restrictions”.
We saw the same pattern with Opus: the Opus 5.2 rumor was renamed Opus 5.5 on September 20, and two days later Anthropic shipped a model called Opus 5.5. That is one precedent, not a law. The honest reading today: if Anthropic ships a new Fable soon, 5.5 is the more likely label because the rest of the family now carries it. Whether a new Fable is coming soon at all has no Anthropic evidence.

Anthropic’s own sentence is the problem a Fable 5.5 has to solve: Opus 5.5 “performs at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work”. A premium Fable has to clear a model that already matches the last premium Fable at 40 percent of its output price. The August 13 post said Fable 5.5 would keep Fable 5 pricing; if so, the gap it has to earn is 2.5 times on output.
§ 04What Anthropic’s own rhythm says
Fable 5 shipped June 9, 2026 and Fable 5.1 on September 1, 84 days apart. A new pretraining run landing 30 days after a point release would be the fastest turn in the Fable line. Across Anthropic’s whole lineup the pace is faster, and Opus 5.5 came 21 days after Fable 5.1, so a model in October is within the company’s rhythm; a Fable specifically in October would be a first.

- An Anthropic announcement page or news entry for a new Fable.
- A new claude-fable identifier in the model documentation.
- A system card at anthropic.com.
- A catalog line on Bedrock, Google Cloud, Foundry or OpenRouter.
- A dated statement from Anthropic naming the model.
A benchmark screenshot, a Claude Code routing report or another post with a window would not. Those go in the chain table.
§ 06Where CellCog stands
CellCog ran its Core and Max tiers on Claude Fable 5.1 from its release day and moved every Claude tier to Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22 (what changed), on price and on behavior in long agentic runs. A Fable 5.5 would be a same-day routing decision on the same terms, and the decision would land here.
