Meta Acquires Conductor: Cloud Shuts Down Nov 20

At a glanceQuick answers
Did Meta buy Conductor?
Yes. Axios reported the deal on November 4, 2026 and Conductor’s CEO, Charlie Holtz, confirmed it on X minutes later. No price was disclosed.
When does Conductor shut down?
Conductor Cloud goes read-only on November 13 and shuts down on November 20, 2026. The Mac app gets new models and fixes until early 2027.
How do I save my Conductor work?
Right-click a cloud workspace and choose Transfer to local, or export all data from Settings, Account, Export data, before November 20.

Meta has acquired Conductor, the startup whose app lets one engineer run a team of coding agents side by side, Axios reported at 18:15 UTC on November 4, 2026, citing people familiar with the deal. Three minutes later Conductor’s CEO, Charlie Holtz, confirmed it on X: “I am very excited to share that Conductor is joining Meta!”

No price has been disclosed. For anyone using Conductor today the dates matter more than the price: new sign-ups stopped the same day, Conductor Cloud goes read-only on November 13 and shuts down on November 20, and the Mac app keeps working until early 2027. It is the second coding-tool deal by a frontier lab in one day, after OpenAI’s agreement to buy Pierre that morning.

It was the second coding-tool deal by a frontier lab that day, after OpenAI agreed to buy Pierre.

§ 01What was announced

Axios broke the news in an exclusive by Madison Mills: “Meta has acquired Conductor, an AI coding startup that lets software engineers manage multiple coding agents simultaneously, sources familiar with the deal tell Axios exclusively.”

Holtz’s post adds where the team lands. He wrote that they will work with Nat Friedman and Alexandr Wang at Meta Superintelligence Labs, that “MSL has the highest talent density of all the labs”, and that “We have some big, crazy plans for the next interface.” Conductor’s own announcement says the same in fewer words and promises: “We’ll have something new for you to use early next year.” The site footer now reads “Conductor from Meta”. Meta itself had not commented when MT Newswires asked.

§ 02What happens to Conductor users

Conductor is winding the product down in four steps. The cloud version goes first; the local Mac app lasts longer.

Date What changes
November 4, 2026 No new sign-ups or downloads; existing pro users keep pro features for free
November 13, 2026 Conductor Cloud goes read-only; active subscribers get a refund
November 20, 2026 Conductor Cloud shuts down and Conductor begins deleting cloud user data
Early 2027 The Mac app stops getting new models and fixes; all user data is deleted

If you use Conductor Cloud, you have sixteen days from the announcement. To keep a cloud workspace and its chats, right-click it and choose Transfer to local. To download everything, go to Settings, then Account, then Export data. On data, the announcement says: “We have never sold or trained on Conductor user data, and we still won’t.”

§ 03What Conductor was

Conductor launched in July 2025 as a Mac app for running coding agents in parallel. Its March 2026 funding post describes the idea: create “isolated copies of your codebase, run agents in each one, and review and merge their work.” It worked with the agents people already paid for, letting users run Codex on a ChatGPT plan and Claude Code on a Claude plan, and its last release before the deal added GPT-6.1 Terra to the Codex model picker.

The same post claimed 10x user growth since January 2026 and named Google, Meta, Amazon, Spotify and others as companies with engineers using it. It also set out the ambition Meta is now buying: “it will become the platform for managing huge AI organizations, available everywhere from your phone to your VPC.”

§ 04Two coding-tool deals in one day

OpenAI announced its Pierre deal at 14:30 UTC; the Conductor report landed under four hours later. Axios framed it as part of one race: “Meta is joining OpenAI and other AI giants in a race to own the tools developers use.”

The two deals buy different layers. Pierre makes Git storage for code that agents write, and OpenAI says its Code Storage customers can keep using it after closing. Conductor makes the layer above, where a person directs several agents at once, and its cloud shuts down in sixteen days. One deal folds a working product into Codex; the other takes a team off the market to build something not yet shown.

§ 05What nobody has said yet

  • The price, and how many Conductor staff join Meta.
  • What MSL will build. The announcement’s FAQ says only: “We can’t share much yet.”
  • Whether Conductor’s users get a path into the new product, beyond the transfer-to-local tool.
  • Meta’s own account of the deal. We found no Meta statement as of 20:55 UTC.

§ 06Teams of agents, and who keeps the record

Conductor’s bet was that one person would soon manage a team of agents. The open question its shutdown leaves is where that team’s history lives when a tool goes away. CellCog’s AI employees keep their memory and files on their own secure computer and work as a team, including an AI software engineer that can work in your codebase.
