Tab, an AI assistant you text instead of opening an app, came out of stealth at a $300 million valuation, TechCrunch reported on October 7, 2026. The company declined to share how much it raised. Investors include SV Angel, Valar Ventures and American Spirit, and the founders are Brennan Erbz, Stafford Schlitt and Ammar Amdani, who started on it earlier this year. You text Tab on iMessage or WhatsApp, and in Amdani’s words: “It has its own phone number, computer, and wallet, so it doesn’t tell you how to do those things. It does them.” Tab’s own site lists it as a private beta with a waitlist and no published price. This page reads TechCrunch’s report and Tab’s site, as of October 7, 2026. A disclosure up front: CellCog builds AI employees, which also get their own phone number, computer and approval-gated spending, so we have a stake in how this category gets described.

Tab, an AI assistant you text on iMessage or WhatsApp, came out of stealth at a $300 million valuation, TechCrunch reported on October 7, 2026.
Investors include SV Angel, Valar Ventures and American Spirit; the company declined to say how much it raised.
Co-founder Ammar Amdani says Tab has its own phone number, computer and wallet, so it does tasks rather than explaining them.
Tab’s site says it shows the item, total and payee before spending, and pays nothing until you approve.
Tab is in private beta with a waitlist; no price, pricing page or underlying model has been published.
§ 01What Tab does
Tab’s site describes a texting assistant that does the task instead of explaining it. You text it the way you would text someone capable, and you can send a photo, screenshot, PDF or video along with the request. “Behind the messages, Tab has its own computer and browser,” the site says. It can open websites, make files and use the accounts you connect.
Two capabilities stand out. For phone work, “It can call a hotel, a doctor’s office, a restaurant, or a vendor, wait on hold, ask the questions, and report back in Messages.” For money: “Before it spends, you see exactly what it is buying, the total, and who gets paid. Nothing is paid until you approve it.”

| Valuation | $300 million | TechCrunch |
| Amount raised | Not disclosed | TechCrunch |

| Spending | Shows the item, total and payee; pays only after you approve | tab.bot |
| Availability | Private beta, join by phone number | tab.bot |
| Price | Not published | tab.bot |
| Underlying model | Not disclosed | None found |
We looked for more. tab.bot has no pricing, FAQ or llms.txt page (each returns a 404 as of October 7), and neither source names the AI model behind it. Amdani told TechCrunch the company is growing mostly by word of mouth and plans to launch a new product soon.
§ 02Trust is the pitch
Amdani’s argument is that capability is no longer the hard part. “We think the harder question is whether you should let it in,” he told TechCrunch. His list of answers: “Your data is never used to train AI. Your card lives in a vault Tab itself never sees. Nothing that can be undone happens without your ‘yes.’” He ends with the line the company is clearly built around: “Trust is the product.”
Those are the founder’s statements in an interview. As of today there is no published privacy policy summary, security page or terms on the site that we could read against them. That is normal for a private beta, and it is the first thing a careful buyer will want once Tab opens up.
§ 03A crowded inbox
Tab is not the only assistant that lives in your text messages. TechCrunch rounded up the category on October 3. Here is Tab next to the ones it named.
| Assistant | Where you text it | Status | Pricing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tab | iMessage, WhatsApp | Private beta | Not published |
| Folk | iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram | Beta since May 2026 | Free; Pro $8.33/month |
| Caddy | iMessage, RCS | Public beta since April 2026 | Not stated |
| Fambot | SMS, plus apps and web | Beta since early September 2026 | Free during beta |
| Instinct | Text or voice | Raised $1 billion at a $10 billion valuation, September 2026 | Not in the roundup |
TechCrunch’s own framing puts Tab in a race with Instinct and Meta’s Muse. Folk is the closest match on architecture: TechCrunch says it also runs on its own private cloud computer. What Tab adds to the pitch is the phone number and the wallet. For more on the two big names, see what Instinct is and what Muse is.
§ 04How it compares to an AI employee
Tab is built for one person’s life admin: bills, bookings, calls and gifts. A CellCog AI employee is built for a role in a business, and it lands on the same three ingredients from the other side. Each employee can hold its own phone number and take or place calls. It works on its own secure computer, with its own file system, browser and logins. And it can buy things from its owner’s Link wallet, with a one-time card the owner approves at the exact amount and merchant.
The differences are about work rather than errands. An AI employee also has its own email inbox, a task board, memory that carries from one day to the next, and coworkers it can hand work to. The owner sets how much it may do without asking. Texting-first is a strength of Tab’s design. You start in a thread you already use, with nothing new to learn, and that is the right shape for a personal assistant.
§ 05What we are watching
- Pricing. Tab has published no price; Folk’s $8.33 Pro tier is the nearest public marker.
- The model. Which AI model runs Tab, and whether it is one or several.
- Trust in writing. Whether the no-training and card-vault statements turn into a published policy.
- The next product. What Amdani’s “new product soon” turns out to be.
